ICYMI: Whistleblower Sounded Alarm on Rushed Political Indictment of SPLC
Reps. Raskin & Scanlon Call For Transparency in New Letter
Washington, D.C. – New whistleblower reports reveal the Department of Justice “rushed through” the indictment of the Southern Poverty Law Center despite concerns about the strength of the case. In response, Reps. Jamie Raskin and Mary Gay Scanlon today demanded records from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama surrounding the decision to indict the SPLC.
As Raskin and Scanlon noted, “According to whistleblower information provided to this Committee, Associate Deputy Attorney General Aakash Singh ordered your office, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama, to rush through the indictment of the SPLC, despite serious concerns about the strength of the case.”
In a separate letter to Associate Deputy Attorney General Aakash Singh, Rep. Raskin laid bare the issue at hand: “DOJ’s exercise in gaslighting-by-indictment also requires America to bury its head in the sand and pretend SPLC’s payments to infiltrate white nationalist groups were meant to support them, despite evidence to the contrary presented in its charging document.”
This is what weaponization looks like: the Trump Administration using the power of the federal government to target political opponents and civil rights organizations, facts be damned.
