Yesterday, the House Homeland Security Committee launched an unfounded and evidence-free probe into more than 200 nonprofit organizations providing services under lawful federal contracts, including religious charities and organizations serving their communities. This is the latest attempt by Congress to weaponize government and target organizations who do not align with the Administration’s political agenda.
The new investigation is on the heels of Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee’s unsuccessful attempt to include language in the recent budget bill that would have allowed the Secretary of Treasury to deem nonprofits enemies of the state without providing evidence — risking de-banking charitable organizations, churches and other key community groups.
The following is a statement from AAGC Executive Director Cole Leiter:
“Congressional oversight of federal funds is important, and Congress has every right to change which programs into which it chooses to invest federal dollars. But that's not what this is. These groups were contracted by the government to provide a service, and now Congress is publicly accusing these same service-providing charities of wrongdoing, simply because they disagree with the goals of those contracts. The government has not offered specific allegations of concern, let alone any evidence of wrongdoing. There is, however, ample evidence of the government using its investigatory powers to target and punish organizations simply for serving their communities.”
