ICYMI: Ted Cruz Compares FCC’s Threats to the Mob

In case you missed it, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) sharply rebuked FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr’s suggestion that the government could move to revoke ABC’s broadcast license over Jimmy Kimmel’s remarks.

Cruz compared the threat to “a mafioso coming into a bar going, nice bar you have here, it’d be a shame if something happened to it,” and cautioned conservatives that weaponizing government authority to punish media critics could easily be turned against them.

“If the government gets in the business of saying, ‘we don’t like what you said, so we’re going to ban you from the airwaves,’ that will end up bad for conservatives… And it might feel good right now to threaten Jimmy Kimmel, but when it is used to silence every conservative in America, we will regret it.” – Sen. Ted Cruz

Cruz joins a growing chorus of voices—from across the political spectrum—warning against the misuse of government power to punish media and political opponents.
