ICYMI: Senate Democrats Push Back on Trump’s Illegal Weaponization of the IRS

Following recent reporting from the Wall Street Journal revealing the administration’s plans to weaponize the IRS against its perceived enemies, Senate Democrats—led by Finance Ranking Member Ron Wyden and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer—want answers. With government overreach on the rise, Senate Democrats are acting swiftly to call for transparency and hold the executive branch accountable.

Yesterday, Finance Committee Democrats sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and deputy chief for IRS Criminal Investigation demanding answers about reported plans to use the IRS to launch politically-motivated investigations into major Democratic donors and other progressive groups. The IRS division is tasked with investigating financial crimes – like tax fraud and public corruption – not with attacking a president’s political opponents.

Americans do not want their government turned into a tool for political retribution. More than 60% of Americans already believe the Trump administration has gone too far in using its power to punish people for speech it dislikes. Across party lines, Americans are sounding the alarm about the government’s increasing abuse of power.
