Washington, D.C. – Following the Trump DOJ’s announcement of the creation of a $1.776 billion slush fund, even Republican stalwarts are condemning the use of taxpayer funds to pay white nationalists, Jan. 6 defendants, and other Trump loyalists.
Read what GOP leaders had to say about Trump’s slush fund:
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY): "So the nation's top law enforcement official is asking for a slush fund to pay people who assault cops? Utterly stupid, morally wrong — take your pick."
Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME): "I do not support the weaponization fund as it has been described. I do not believe individuals that were convicted of violence against police officers on Jan. 6 should be entitled to reimbursement of their legal fees."
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI): "Somebody described it as a galactic blunder, and I think that's probably true."
Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA): "People are concerned about paying their mortgage or rent, affording groceries and paying for gas, not about putting together a $1.8 billion fund for the President and his allies to pay whomever they wish with no legal precedent or accountability. This is adding to our national debt. If there needs to be a settlement, the administration should bring it to Congress to decide."
Sen. John Curtis (R-UT): "I don't like the fund at all." / "From all outward appearances, this doesn't pass the smell test."
Sen. John Thune (R-SD): "We have a lot of members who are concerned obviously."
Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA): “This is not a unilateral executive decision. If you're dealing with appropriated money, that's got to come through us."
