Disagreeing with a politician does not make you a terrorist

New FBI/IRS Initiative is Latest in Broader Effort to Punish Perceived Enemies

Washington, D.C. – Earlier today, CBS News reported that the FBI and IRS are planning to join forces to investigate unsubstantiated claims of American nonprofits supporting domestic terrorism. This new joint initiative is the latest action in the Trump Administration’s agenda to silence dissent and punish political opponents.

AAGC Executive Director Cole Leiter released the following statement:

“Americans understand that disagreeing with a politician does not make you a terrorist, but President Trump refuses to accept that fundamental freedom our country is built upon. While the Department of Justice and IRS are teaming up to label his enemies domestic terrorists, his allies on Capitol Hill are attempting to seize control of elections and make it harder for Americans to vote. No President should have, or seek, this power.”

Key Atmospherics:

The Department of Justice and the IRS made the announcement today in the context of a larger conversation about elections, domestic terrorism and the weaponization of government against political prisoners. Today alone:

  • The President is currently pushing the Senate to adopt the SAVE America Act and Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters he plans to use the issue as a cudgel if Democrats don’t acquiesce to the President.

  • Senator Elissa Slotkin grilled DHS nominee Sen. Markwayne Mullin about plans to use ICE agents for political intimidation at voting locations. Mullin refused to commit to keeping ICE agents away from voting booths.

  • The FBI and IRS announced this joint task force to investigate progressive nonprofits for domestic terrorism, a major escalation in the campaign to weaponize the levers of government against political opponents.
