Washington, DC — Americans Against Government Censorship Executive Director Cole Leiter released the following statement after the President threatened to revoke Harvard University’s tax exempt status on Tuesday because the University promotes “political and ideological” positions he disagrees with. In the same post, the President also accused the University of supporting terrorists without providing any evidence to support such a claim.

“No administration — Republican or Democratic — should be able to weaponize the government against groups that don’t adopt its political agenda. But today, the current administration made clear they want to start shutting down organizations that present any sort of opposition to their goals or ideology. Today the organization being threatened by the government is Harvard, tomorrow it could be a community organization feeding the hungry or helping children with disabilities.

“It is even more dangerous for this administration to use baseless accusations of terrorism as an excuse for these threats.

“Non-profits and charitable organizations provide critical services for our communities, whether that be educating our students, advocating for policy changes, fostering religious communities, feeding the poor, supporting the homeless, or providing other services to our communities.

“If the Trump Administration decides it wants to target schools, groups, churches or welfare organizations because they don’t fall in line with their political agenda, it will open the door for any future administration to use this same unchecked power against more American citizens. This is dangerous practice and it is one that should end before it ever begins.”

This threat to weaponize the government comes in response to a letter from Harvard University President Alan M. Garber, in which he said the University would not surrender its academic freedom in exchange for federal funds.
