AAGC Applauds Reps. Doggett and Sewell Bill to Guarantee Fairness for Nonprofits

PROOF Act will establish due process safeguards for nonprofits being targeted by the IRS

Washington, D.C. – Today, Reps. Lloyd Doggett and Terri Sewell -- Ranking Member of the Ways & Means Oversight Subcommittee -- introduced new legislation, The PROOF Act, to safeguard protections and due process for organizations with tax-exempt status. Cole Leiter, Executive Director of Americans Against Government Censorship shared the following statement:

"No Administration should be able to use the IRS as a political weapon to silence organizations opposed by the sitting President. The IRS should be a nonpartisan, view-point neutral entity that enforces our tax code equally and without political interference. Right now, tax-exempt organizations like churches, advocacy groups, and nonprofits that fall out of favor with Trump and his allies risk losing their tax-exempt status without statutory protections nor due process enshrined in law. The PROOF Act is a vital shield against this kind of manipulation and overreach going forward, regardless of who is in office. It would require the IRS to show its work and give organizations real due process before doing irreparable harm. Legislation like the PROOF Act is how we start dismantling the weaponization machine and make these agencies accountable to the American people."
